Counterproductive knowledge behavior in volunteer work: perspectives from the theory of planned behavior and well-being theory

Purpose This study aims to identify the counterproductive knowledge behavior (CKB) of volunteers in nonprofit organizations and its influencing factors, based on theories planned well-being. Design/methodology/approach An online survey was used collect 496 valid responses. A structural equation model constructed, relationships among constructs were estimated via maximum likelihood method. To analyze direct indirect effects, 2,000 bootstrapping runs conducted. Kruskal-Wallis test also conducted relationship between variables. Findings combination organizational factors individual attitudes perceptions can be explain CKB. Insecurity about sharing had greatest impact competitive norm induced CKB while a knowledge-sharing did not have significant impact. Further, more self-determined volunteer activity was, suppressed. However, well-being effect. Volunteers with high levels self-determination significantly lower insecurity compared those who not. Practical implications Well-being arising from volunteering directly suppress improve efficiency by reducing CKB, organization managers should provide intrinsically motivating tasks interact volunteers. Originality/value There is lack empirical research organizations; therefore, authors propose new approach management activities.
